The ARS "Techniques in Equine Reproduction" 6th Edition is the latest guided tour of breeding management procedures, diagnostic tests, and therapeutic protocols for the stallion, mare, and newborn foal. Author, Patrick M. McCue, DVM, PhD, has added over 60 pages of additional chapters, updated information, step by step instructions, and photographs to this 218 page book. The goal of this book is to provide an accurate and up-to-date educational resource for horse owners, breeders and students interested in equine reproduction.
The book begins with chapters on anatomy and physiology of the stallion. Subsequent chapters review reproductive evaluation of the stallion, semen collection, semen evaluation, and preparation of semen doses for fresh insemination and cooled-storage. The stallion section is completed by a detailed review of freezing of stallion semen and reproductive problems of stallions.
The mare section starts with reviews of anatomy and physiology, followed by chapters on reproductive evaluation of the mare, artificial photoperiod and hormone therapy, breeding management, reproductive problems of mares and artificial insemination.
The third section of the book covers physiology and endocrinology of pregnancy, pregnancy examination, twin management, management of the pregnant mare, prediction of foaling, normal foaling, dystocia, management of the post-partum mare, colostrum evaluation and management, care of the newborn foal and care of an orphan foal.
Overall, this book is highly recommended for stallion managers, breeding farm managers and foaling attendants as well as animal science, equine science and veterinary students.
